Why convert CSV → JSON

What this conversion is actually for

CSV is what spreadsheets and analysts export; JSON is what code, APIs, and config systems consume. Converting bridges the gap when you need to seed a database, feed a script, mock an API response, or import data into a JS/Python tool that expects an array of objects.

A real example

A colleague sends `users.csv` from Excel. You need to seed your dev database with it via a Node script that expects `[{name, email, ...}]`. Convert here, get a JSON array, `JSON.parse` it in the seed script.

Troubleshooting

Numbers came through as strings ("42" not 42).

CSV has no types, every cell is text. We preserve values as strings to avoid corrupting things like ZIP codes, phone numbers, and IDs with leading zeros (`007` must not become `7`). Coerce specific fields to numbers in your code where you know it's safe.

Commas inside a field broke the columns.

Properly quoted CSV (`"Smith, John"`) parses correctly. If the source wasn't quoting fields with commas, that CSV is malformed at the source, re-export from the spreadsheet with proper quoting (every standard exporter does this by default).

CSV, Comma-Separated Values

CSV is plain text, one row per line, fields separated by commas. The simplest possible tabular data format, which is exactly why it remains the most portable: every spreadsheet, database, programming language, and analytics tool reads CSV. Tradeoffs: no formulas, no formatting, no multiple sheets, and various edge cases around quoting fields that contain commas or newlines.

JSON, JavaScript Object Notation

JSON is a lightweight text format for structured data, nested objects, arrays, strings, numbers, booleans. It's the lingua franca of web APIs, configuration files, and data interchange between programs. Human-readable when formatted, machine-parseable in every programming language, and roughly half the size of equivalent XML.

How to open

Any text editor reads JSON. Browsers display .json files in a formatted tree view. VS Code and similar editors highlight syntax.

What's the maximum file size?

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.

Why convert CSV to JSON?

Universal tabular data interchange. API responses, configuration files, structured data interchange. The most common reason to convert is compatibility, JSON works in places where CSV doesn't, or vice versa.
