About RGB and HSL

RGB, Red Green Blue color tuple

RGB describes a color by the intensity of red, green, and blue light needed to produce it on a screen — each channel 0 to 255. It's the native model of every display device since CRT monitors, and the underlying representation behind hex codes (#FF6347 is just rgb(255, 99, 71) in hexadecimal). Used directly in CSS, web design, every image format, and digital photography pipelines. Doesn't represent print colors well, that's CMYK's job.

How to open

RGB values appear as text in CSS files, design tool color pickers, and web inspector tools. Pasting `rgb(255, 99, 71)` into Chrome DevTools' color input gives you a swatch. Designers most often deal with RGB through HEX codes (the same data, different encoding).

HSL, Hue Saturation Lightness color model

HSL describes a color by hue (0-360° around the color wheel), saturation (0-100% gray to vivid), and lightness (0-100% black to white). Designers prefer it over RGB because shifting one dimension keeps the others intact — drop saturation and you get a desaturated version of the same color, no manual rebalancing. CSS supports HSL natively (`hsl(207, 87%, 56%)`) and most modern color systems (Tailwind, Material) generate palettes by varying HSL axes.

What's the maximum file size?

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.

Why convert RGB to HSL?

Specifying screen colors in code and design tools. Designer-friendly color specification where you want to vary one dimension. The most common reason to convert is compatibility, HSL works in places where RGB doesn't, or vice versa.
