What this conversion is actually for

Researchers often keep references in a spreadsheet (one row per source, columns like title, author, year, journal, DOI). This reads your OpenDocument / LibreOffice Calc sheet and writes BibTeX so you can import the whole library into a LaTeX or Overleaf bibliography at once. Column headers are matched case- and alias-insensitively, so PubMed, Zotero, and Excel exports work without renaming anything. Runs in your browser, nothing is uploaded.

Troubleshooting

No references found, or fields are missing.

The first row must be headers naming the fields (title, author/authors, year, journal, doi, ...). If a column is missing from the output, rename its header to one of those names. Only the first sheet is read.

ODS, OpenDocument Spreadsheet

ODS is the OpenDocument format spreadsheet, used by LibreOffice Calc, Apache OpenOffice Calc, and Collabora Online. ZIP-packaged XML structure standardized by ISO/IEC 26300. The free/open-source counterpart to Microsoft's XLSX. Excel reads ODS but with feature loss on complex formulas; LibreOffice reads XLSX with similar caveats.

BibTeX, BibTeX bibliography

BibTeX is the de facto bibliography format for LaTeX since 1985, plain-text entries like @article{key, author={...}, title={...}, journal={...}, year={2024}}. Used by every academic publisher's LaTeX template and supported as an import/export format by Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote, and Papers. Strengths: trivially diff-able in git, scriptable, tooling-rich. Weakness: there's no single canonical spec, so different parsers handle edge cases (special characters, cross-references, @string macros) inconsistently.

How to open

Any text editor (the format is plain text). Reference managers like Zotero, Mendeley, JabRef, BibDesk all read and write it natively.

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.

Why convert ODS to BibTeX?
