USDZ
Universal Scene Description (zip archive)
USDZ is Apple's packaging of Pixar's USD (Universal Scene Description): a single uncompressed zip archive holding a .usda/.usdc scene plus its textures, with 64-byte data alignment so the file can be memory-mapped. It is the native format of AR Quick Look, meaning iPhones and iPads can place a USDZ model in the room straight from Safari with no app install. Announced at WWDC 2018 and now the standard for web AR product previews on Apple devices.
How to open a USDZ file
On iPhone/iPad, tapping a USDZ link opens AR Quick Look automatically. On macOS, Preview and Quick Look render it. Reality Composer (Apple) and Blender 4.x (via USD) can edit the contents; usdzip and usdview ship with Pixar's USD toolset.
Primary use
AR Quick Look product previews on iOS and macOS.
