DOC
Microsoft Word Document (legacy)
DOC is the binary file format Microsoft Word used from 1997 to 2007. Since 2007, Word has saved as .docx by default, DOC is the older, less interoperable format. Modern Word and most other office suites still read .doc files for backward compatibility. Converting to DOCX or PDF is recommended for sharing.
How to open a DOC file
Microsoft Word (all versions), LibreOffice, Google Docs, Apple Pages. Compatibility with the legacy format is universal but cosmetic differences may appear.
