Why convert FEN → PNG
A FEN string is unreadable to anyone who is not a chess engine. Rendering it to a PNG board image lets you drop the position into notes, a blog post, a forum, or slides without a chess program, and it stays readable to everyone.
You are writing a tactics article and want a clean diagram of the critical position. Paste the FEN, convert to PNG, and drop the image straight into your document. No screenshots of a chess site needed.
Pieces look like boxes or are missing.
Pieces are drawn with Unicode chess glyphs. The render happens in your browser, so a browser or OS missing a Unicode chess font can show tofu boxes. Modern Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all include them.

Formats involved
FEN is a single-line text representation of one chess position, piece placement, side to move, castling rights, en passant target, halfmove clock, and fullmove number. Used by chess engines for position analysis, by chess servers for sharing puzzles, and by GUIs for board setup. Unlike PGN (which represents a game), FEN represents a single static position.

PNG is a lossless image format, the file size is larger than JPG, but every pixel is preserved exactly. It supports full transparency (alpha channel), which JPG cannot. Created in 1996 specifically as a patent-free replacement for GIF, PNG is the standard for screenshots, logos, icons, UI graphics, and any image that needs sharp text or transparent backgrounds.
How to open
Universal support, every OS, browser, and image editor reads PNG. macOS Preview, Windows Photos, and any web browser open PNGs without any conversion step.

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.
