Why convert EML → CSV
Extract email metadata (from, to, subject, date) into a spreadsheet, for e-discovery review, an audit, building a contact list, or analyzing a thread's timeline.
Compliance wants a spreadsheet of every email in a dispute: sender, recipient, subject, timestamp. Convert the .eml files to CSV here, load into Excel, sort by date for the timeline.
The body isn't fully in the CSV.
CSV is metadata-oriented here; long HTML bodies are truncated/flattened into a cell because spreadsheets choke on huge multiline cells. For full-body review, use eml-to-pdf or eml-to-html per message; CSV is for the metadata index.
Formats involved
EML is the IETF-standard email message format (.eml extension), plain-text headers (From, To, Subject, Date), a blank line, then the body. MIME multipart structure handles HTML email bodies and attachments. Most email clients (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird) save individual messages as EML when you drag them out of the inbox.

CSV is plain text, one row per line, fields separated by commas. The simplest possible tabular data format, which is exactly why it remains the most portable: every spreadsheet, database, programming language, and analytics tool reads CSV. Tradeoffs: no formulas, no formatting, no multiple sheets, and various edge cases around quoting fields that contain commas or newlines.

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.
Email message archiving and forensic preservation. Universal tabular data interchange. The most common reason to convert is compatibility, CSV works in places where EML doesn't, or vice versa.

Once the page is loaded, the conversion itself runs entirely offline. The first time you use a tool, your browser downloads the conversion library (a one-time cache). If you reload while offline, the page won't load, but you can install the site as a Progressive Web App for full offline use.
