nothing uploaded no file size cap no signup

How it works

Three steps. No upload, no signup.

  1. 1

    Drop your file

Click the dropzone above or drag a Discord Export from your desktop. Files of any size, there's no upload, so there's no upload limit.

  2. 2

    Convert in your browser

The conversion runs entirely in this tab using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file never touches our servers, we don't have any.

  3. 3

    Download

Get your Markdown (.md) the moment the conversion finishes. Convert another, or close the tab.

Files stay on your device

Your file is never uploaded. The entire conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly. We can't see what you convert because we have no server to see it.

No file size limit

Server converters cap free users at 1-2 GB and gate larger files behind a paid plan. Since nothing uploads, our limit is whatever your browser can handle.

Free, no signup, no ads on conversions

No account required. No watermark on the output. No queue. Drop a file, get a converted file.

Why convert Discord Chat → Markdown

What this conversion is actually for

Discord's official 'export channel' feature is locked behind a server admin role and outputs HTML. If you want your DMs or private server messages as plain Markdown, for archiving, search, indexing in Obsidian, or feeding into an LLM, converting the JSON export from DiscordChatExporter (the community standard) to Markdown gives you portable, future-proof text.

A real example

You have 5 years of DMs with a friend. You used DiscordChatExporter's GUI to dump them as JSON. You want one .md file per conversation, with timestamps, attachments referenced inline, and reactions preserved. Drop the JSON here, get clean Markdown that opens in any editor and indexes in Obsidian or Logseq.

Troubleshooting

Inline images are broken in my Markdown viewer.

We reference attachments by their original Discord CDN URL. Discord rotates these URLs every ~24h for security; old links 404 fast. If you want permanent images, run DiscordChatExporter with the --attachments flag, which downloads them locally; then edit the URLs in the .md to point at your local files.

Custom emoji come out as :name: instead of the image.

Custom Discord emoji are server-specific and only render inside Discord. Markdown has no equivalent. We preserve the :emoji_name: shortcode so you can search for them; rendering would require uploading every custom emoji somewhere persistent first.

About Discord Export and Markdown (.md)

Discord Export, DiscordChatExporter JSON

DiscordChatExporter (Tyrrrz) is the de facto tool for exporting Discord channel/server logs to JSON, HTML, CSV, or plain text. JSON output is the most data-rich, full message structure with author, timestamp, content, attachments, reactions, mentions, embeds. Used by community moderators, OSINT researchers (Bellingcat publishes a guide), and Discord server admins archiving before deletion.

How to open

DiscordChatExporter for fresh exports. JSON files open in any editor; for human reading, convert to Markdown, PDF, or rendered HTML.

Markdown (.md), Markdown

Markdown is plain text with simple punctuation conventions for formatting, # for headings, * for lists, ** for bold, links as [text](url). The .md extension is the most common Markdown file extension; .markdown is the older form. GitHub READMEs, documentation sites, and Obsidian/Bear use Markdown universally.

How to open

Any text editor. Rendered: GitHub, GitLab, VS Code preview, Obsidian, Bear, Typora, MarkText.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this Discord Chat → Markdown converter really free?

Yes. No signup, no watermark, no daily file count limit. Every conversion runs in your browser, your file never touches our servers because there are no servers.

Where does my file go when I convert it?

Nowhere. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your file is never uploaded to our servers. We don't have any servers handling files, there's nothing for us to log, store, or accidentally leak.

What's the maximum file size?

Whatever your browser can hold in memory. Practically, this means a few hundred MB on most computers, significantly larger than the 1-2 GB caps that server-upload converters charge for. Very large files (multi-GB) may require closing other browser tabs first.

Why convert Discord Export to Markdown (.md)?

Community moderation logs; OSINT investigations; archival of Discord servers. Documentation, READMEs, notes, blog posts. The most common reason to convert is compatibility, Markdown (.md) works in places where Discord Export doesn't, or vice versa.

How do I open a Discord Export file in the first place?

DiscordChatExporter for fresh exports. JSON files open in any editor; for human reading, convert to Markdown, PDF, or rendered HTML.

Does this work offline?

Once the page is loaded, the conversion itself runs entirely offline. The first time you use a tool, your browser downloads the conversion library (a one-time cache). If you reload while offline, the page won't load, but you can install the site as a Progressive Web App for full offline use.

Can I convert multiple files at once?

Single file at a time for now. Batch conversion is on the roadmap, for now, drop one file, download the result, then convert the next.
